Book Talk - Born At Midnight by C.C. Hunter

Sixteen year old Kylie Galen is having a rough couple of weeks! Her parents are getting divorced, her nana has recently passed away, and now she's being stalked by some stranger she's nicknamed "Solder Dude" (thanks to his army duds). The weirdest part about that is that apparently she's the only one who can see him! Does that make him a ghost? There's no such thing! Right?

To go along with Kylie's new found bad luck, she gets caught at a party where everyone is drinking, and now her parents want to ship her off to some camp for troubled teens. Can it get any worse? Apparently so. When she gets to Camp Shadow Falls she soon uncovers the truth, that this isn't a camp for troubled teens at all, but a camp for supernatural teens to come together and learn how to harness their new powers. Kylie is sure that there's been some sort of mistake, but everyone she meets tells her she's one of them. Kylie's never felt normal, but she's never felt supernatural, either. If she were one of them, wouldn't she know?

With a string of funny and interesting characters, Kylie finally starts to feel comfortable in her new surroundings. New friends, magic, and an hot love triangle make for one crazy summer.
I really enjoyed this book! Even though it starts out a little slow, it really starts to pick up around the fourth chapter. You get to meet all these quirky characters with cool supernatural powers; vampires, werewolves, witches, fairies! Then you get to go along on Kylie's journey of self discovery as she tries to figure out what or who she is.

I also really loved the supernatural background that the author gave. You don't really have any supernatural limits in this book, there's a whole realm of possibilities! For example, in the story you can get your powers in either three ways; they can be hereditary, you can be changed (like bitten by a vampire), or you can get your powers from the Gods. Also, another interesting supernatural fact in this story is that species can mix, but the species with the closer lineage to the Gods is the gene that gets passed through the DNA. How cool is that?! I just love how the author explains the details in an entertaining way instead of making me feel like I'm in History class.
Even though I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I disliked the lack of romance in the love triangle. Hopefully it really starts to pick up in the next book, Awake At Dawn.

All in all, this is a really fun and easy read. It's slow to start, but once you get started it really pulls you in. A little mix of supernatural mystery that will have you turning the page for more!
